The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Mr. Marc-André Franche, met with the Honorable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka at the Supreme Court in Colombo today, 29 September 2025, to discuss strengthening cooperation in advancing justice sector reforms and enhancing access to justice across the country.

During the meeting, Mr. Franche extended his warm congratulations to the Honorable Chief Justice on his appointment. He acknowledged the Chief Justice’s pivotal role in upholding the rule of law and guiding Sri Lanka’s judiciary at a time of significant reforms in governance and justice delivery.

In his congratulatory message, Mr. Franche reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to working closely with the judiciary and relevant stakeholders to promote accountability, transparency, and efficiency within the justice system. He emphasized the importance of advancing Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, as part of Sri Lanka’s efforts to build a just and inclusive society.

“The United Nations in Sri Lanka stands ready to support the judiciary in driving forward reforms that ensure access to justice for all citizens,” said Mr. Franche. “Through our collective efforts, we aim to strengthen the justice system, foster public trust, and uphold the principles of fairness and equality.”

The Honorable Chief Justice expressed his appreciation for the United Nations’ continued partnership and welcomed future collaboration in areas such as judicial capacity building, modernization of court processes, and initiatives to strengthen the delivery of justice.

The United Nations also commended the Supreme Court’s initiative in the digitalization of the justice sector through the “e-Courts Project”, and pledged to support training programs on digital transformation, as well as assist in providing the necessary infrastructure to modernize and enhance court services across the country. Support will also include capacity-building programs for Judicial Officers to strengthen their ability to effectively utilize digital tools in court proceedings and administration.

This meeting marks a significant step in reinforcing the partnership between the Supreme Court and the United Nations to advance shared goals in justice sector reform and sustainable development.
