Supreme Court Launches First Internship Programme;

While internship programmes exist for students of other faculties, the Faculty of Law had not previously been offered such an opportunity. At the request of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, His Lordship the Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena favorably considered the proposal, leading to the launch of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka’s first-ever internship programme for law students on 18 September 2025. This three-month initiative provides a rare opportunity for students to experience the workings of the judiciary and to bridge the gap between legal theory and practical application.

On 26 September 2025, His Lordship the Chief Justice welcomed the interns and emphasized two guiding values: ‘Common sense is the most uncommon’ and ‘Every matter is important.’ His Lordship highlighted that the programme is vital as it provides practical courtroom experience, sharpens legal skills, and instills the professionalism and ethical values essential for a successful legal career. The interns will also have the opportunity to observe every branch of the Court, allowing them to witness the full range of responsibilities, challenges, and practical aspects of Judicial administration. This exposure will provide them with a clear understanding of court operations while fostering stronger mutual appreciation between Court staff and Attorneys-at-Law. The interns were urged to approach each task with wisdom, respect, and diligence

This milestone reflects the Court’s commitment to nurturing future legal professionals, combining skill with ethics and professionalism, and stands as a proud moment for the University of Colombo.
