Dr. Rafael Prado, LLD, The Nippon Foundation Lecturer on Global Ocean Governance at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Preethi Padman Surasena, Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, on 22nd September 2025.

 Mr. Aravinda Gunaratne, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka / Judge of the Sri Lanka Judicial Service, (Selected Student of the IMLI Class of 2025-2026), Kanishka Rajakaruna, State Counsel – Attorney General’s Department, Sri Lanka, (IMLI Class of 2023-2024) and Sameera Lakshantha, Lieutenant Commander, Sri Lanka Navy, (IMLI Class of 2024-2025) were participated in this discussion.

During their meeting, Hon. Chief Justice Surasena and Dr. Prado engaged in a discussion on key issues relating to Maritime Law in Sri Lanka, including legal and judicial challenges faced by the island nation. They further explored avenues for enhanced collaboration between the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and the Sri Lankan Judiciary, with the aim of strengthening maritime legal governance and capacity-building in the region. Hon Chief Justice extended His Lordship’s regards to Professor Dr. Norman A. Martínez Gutiérrez Director General of the IMLI and Ms. Anusha Fernando Former Deputy Solicitor General, (Sri Lanka) Admissions and Student Affairs Officer at IMLI, for their valuable support extended to the Sri Lanka Judiciary.
