Official Visit of the Honourable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka to the Supreme Court of India

At the invitation of His Lordship the Honourable Chief Justice of India, Hon. Justice Surya Kant, His Lordship the Honourable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka undertook an official visit to India to attend the Swearing-in Ceremony of the Honourable Chief Justice of India.

The Sri Lankan delegation comprised the Honourable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Hon. Justice S. Thurairaja, P.C., Hon. Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz, and Hon. Ms. Manodhi Hewawasam, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The visit spanned six days and marked an important milestone in strengthening judicial relations between the two nations.

During this official visit, cordial and constructive discussions were held between the Honourable Chief Justices of Sri Lanka and India on matters relating to the development of the judiciary, enhancement of judicial efficiency, and the evolving scope of the justice sector. Particular emphasis was placed on judicial reforms, modernization of court processes, and the use of technology to improve access to justice.

The discussions further explored opportunities for judicial education, training programmes, and academic exchanges for judicial officers. Insight was also gained into the functioning of courts in India, best practices adopted within the Indian judicial system, and comparative approaches to judicial administration.

This high-level engagement reaffirmed the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the judiciaries of Sri Lanka and India, and underscored the shared commitment of both nations to upholding the rule of law, judicial independence, and continuous institutional development.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka looks forward to continued collaboration and mutual learning with the Supreme Court of India in the years ahead.
