The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka continues to strengthen judicial cooperation with the Republic of India through a series of high-level official visits and judicial training initiatives, reaffirming the shared commitment of both nations to the rule of law, judicial independence, and institutional development.
On 23 October 2025, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka welcomed the Honourable Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, on an official visit to Colombo. During the visit, Honourable Justice Surya Kant sat on the Bench alongside His Lordship the Honourable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Mr. Preethi Padman Surasena, symbolising the mutual respect and longstanding friendship between the two Apex Courts. This was followed by an official visit of the Honourable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka to India on 24 November 2025, at the invitation of the Honourable Chief Justice of India, during which constructive discussions were held on judicial reforms, modernization of court processes, and the use of technology to enhance access to justice.
Building on these engagements, the first phase of a judicial training programme for Supreme Court Justices of Sri Lanka was launched in India, with ten Honourable Justices, including the Honourable Chief Justice, participating in an eight-day programme. The initiative, coordinated and sponsored by the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, provided valuable exposure to judicial administration and modern justice delivery, and included an interview with The Hindu in which the Honourable Chief Justice of Sri Lanka shared insights on the rule of law, digital transformation, and judicial modernization. The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka looks forward to extending such initiatives across the broader judicial sector.
