Hon. Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna

His Lordship Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna is a sitting Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.  Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court, he was a presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal where writ applications are heard. He has served as the Acting President of the Court of Appeal on several occasions.   

Justice Rajakaruna who joined the Attorney General’s Department as a State Counsel, served for almost 27 years before he was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2020. He was holding the post of Senior Deputy Solicitor General at the time of his elevation and was a Supervising Officer of the Civil Division of the Attorney General’s Department.

He has obtained the Master of Laws (L.L.M) Degree from the University of Colombo. 

He has followed Commercial Law and Professional Development Programmes at the National University of Singapore and at the Deakin University in Australia. He has also gained training on Strategic Trade Management Policy (International Anti-Proliferation and Threat Training) at the Security & Strategic Trade Management Academy at the University of Georgia, USA.

Justice Rajakaruna has been awarded the ‘Certificate in Adjudication’ by the Kuala Lumpur Regional Center for Arbitration in Malaysia.

He is the author of the book titled “Changing Party allegiance and Termination of Parliamentary mandate”. It is a book written considering the Constitutional aspects of the relevant subject.

He was appointed by the SAARC Arbitration Council as an Arbitrator/Expert to the panel of Arbitrators of the SAARC Arbitration Council in the year 2014.

He has been appointed as an ‘Adjudicator’ by the Kuala Lumpur Regional Center for Arbitration.

Whilst Justice Rajakaruna was serving the Attorney General’s Department he has assisted and participated in many Negotiations with the experts of the Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna at working Committee meetings on amending the Atomic Energy Law in Sri Lanka. He has provided guidance and assistance on the field of Atomic Energy Law to the Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka since the year 2010. His Lordship currently serves as the Chairman of the Committee appointed by the relevant Minister to draft new legislation on Atomic Energy Law for Sri Lanka.  

He has represented the country at many international fora including the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Sessions of Working Groups at the UN Headquarters in New York and also in Vienna.

He was the visiting lecturer for the subject of Constitutional Law at the Sri Lanka Law College for several years. He has served as a guest lecturer at Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute, Colombo and Staff Defense College in Sapugaskanda.
