Admission and Enrolment of an Attorney-at-Law.

This is to bring to your kind attention Rule 68(c) of Supreme Court Rules, 1978 and Rule 36 and 23(11) of the Council of Legal Education Sri Lanka.

Supreme Court Rule 68,

68. Every such application shall be in the form of a petition to the Supreme Court to which shall be annexed

(C) a certificate from the Attorney-at-law whose chambers he has attended that he duly attended his Chambers and that he practically understands the details of the practice of an Attorney-at-law:

Council of Legal Education Sri Lanka Rule 36, (Rules made under Section 7 of Incorporated Council of Legal Education Ordinance)

After passing the Final Examination for the admission of Attorneys-at-Law a student shall in accordance with the Regulation in schedule III, attend for a period of six months the chambers of an attorney-at-Law of 8 years standing practicing in Sri Lanka and familiarise himself with the ordinary business of an Attorney-at-Law and shall also attend such Practical Training Course as may be prescribed by the Council.

Provided that where, in the case of an Attorney-at-Law student, the council is satisfied that the student has in a judicial capacity acquired sufficient practical acquaintance with the Principles of Legal procedure it may dispense with the requirements of the rule.

Council of Legal Education Sri Lanka Rule 23 (11), (Rules made under section 7 of Incorporated Council of Legal Education Ordinance)

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in sub rule (1), a person shall not be admitted to qualify as an Attorney-At-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka if it appears that by reason of employment or otherwise he is unable to attend lectures as required by rule 21 or is unable to comply with the provisions of rule 36 relating to period of apprenticeship,

Please ensure that due regard is given to the aforesaid Rules when issuing certifications of Termination of Apprenticeship under Supreme Court Rule 68(c), for the purpose of admission and enrolment of new Attorneys-at-Law of the Supreme Court.
